How to Fix High Ping and Packet Loss in PC and Console Games

In competitive online multiplayer games, millisecond delays determine victory or defeat. High ping, also called latency, causes delayed input response, while packet loss leads to “rubberbanding”—where your character suddenly teleports backward across the map.

This guide outlines practical network optimizations to reduce ping and eliminate packet loss without requiring expensive hardware upgrades.


Understanding Ping vs. Packet Loss

  • Ping (latency): Measured in milliseconds (ms), ping is the time required for data to travel from your device to the game server and back. Lower ping—ideally under 50ms—creates a faster, more responsive experience.
  • Packet loss: Expressed as a percentage, packet loss occurs when data units fail to reach their destination. Even 1% to 2% packet loss can create noticeable stutter in online games.

Step 1: Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet

Wireless signals are vulnerable to local interference from radio frequencies, walls, and household electronics. That interference can directly cause packet dropouts and unstable latency.

  1. Connect your PC or console directly to your router using a Cat6 or Cat6a Ethernet cable.
  2. Disable the Wi-Fi adapter on your device to force network routing strictly through the wired connection.
  3. Test your connection stability in-game. Ethernet can eliminate many local packet-loss issues caused by an unreliable wireless signal.

Step 2: Flush DNS and Reset the Network Stack

Stale network configuration and socket problems can cause your system to route game traffic inefficiently. A DNS flush and network-stack reset provide a clean starting point.

  1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator on Windows.
  2. Enter the following commands one at a time, pressing Enter after each:
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
  1. Restart your PC to allow the network sockets and configuration to fully re-initialize.

Step 3: Use Public High-Performance DNS Servers

Your internet service provider’s default Domain Name System (DNS) server may be overloaded or slow. Switching to a reliable public resolver can improve lookup consistency, although it will not shorten the physical distance to the game server.

  1. Press Win + R, type ncpa.cpl, and press Enter to open Network Connections.
  2. Right-click your active network connection and select Properties.
  3. Highlight Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click Properties.
  4. Select Use the following DNS server addresses.
  5. Set the preferred DNS to 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) and the alternate DNS to 8.8.8.8 (Google).
  6. Check Validate settings upon exit, then click OK.

Step 4: Configure Quality of Service on Your Router

If other devices on your home network stream 4K video or download large files while you play, your game packets can become queued behind heavier media traffic. Quality of Service (QoS) lets the router prioritize the device you use for gaming.

  1. Log into your router’s administrative panel. Common local addresses include 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1.
  2. Locate the QoS (Quality of Service) or Traffic Prioritization setting.
  3. Enable QoS and assign high priority to your PC or console’s local IP or MAC address.
  4. Save the settings and reboot the router.

Check the Result Before Your Next Match

Run a wired connection test, confirm that packet loss remains at 0%, and choose the closest available game-server region. If every device in your home still experiences high latency after these changes, contact your internet provider and share a traceroute so it can investigate congestion or routing problems outside your network.
