How to Fix Low FPS and Game Stuttering on Windows PC
Clean up driver conflicts, adjust Windows graphics settings, and prevent GPU downclocking for smoother, more consistent gameplay.

Stuttering—sudden drops in frame rate during gameplay—can ruin an otherwise smooth gaming experience. Even powerful hardware can stutter because of driver conflicts, background processes, thermal limits, or inconsistent power management.
Use this checklist to improve frame pacing and achieve more stable performance on a Windows gaming PC.
Step 1: Clean Install Graphics Drivers
Corrupted, outdated, or conflicting graphics drivers are a common cause of sudden frame-rate drops.
- Download the latest appropriate driver package directly from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel.
- Download a trusted driver-cleanup utility such as Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).
- Create a restore point, disconnect from the internet, and boot Windows into Safe Mode.
- Run DDU to remove the old display driver, then restart.
- Install the fresh manufacturer driver and reboot once more.
Step 2: Test Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling
Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) can improve performance in some configurations but cause micro-stutters in others. Treat this setting as a controlled test rather than a universal fix.
- Press
Win + Iand open System > Display > Graphics. - Select Change default graphics settings.
- Turn Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling off.
- Restart the PC and compare performance in the same game and scene.
Step 3: Adjust GPU Power Management
- Right-click the desktop and open NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software.
- Navigate to Manage 3D Settings on NVIDIA or the relevant game profile on AMD.
- Set the game’s power mode to Prefer maximum performance.
- Apply the changes and test whether the GPU now maintains stable clock speeds.
Step 4: Check Temperatures and Background Load
Use a hardware-monitoring tool to watch CPU and GPU temperatures, clock speeds, and utilization while the stutter occurs. Close overlays, launchers, browser tabs, recording software, and unnecessary background apps before testing.
If clock speeds fall as temperatures rise, clean dust from the system, confirm that fans are working, and improve case airflow. If utilization is low but one CPU core is saturated, lower CPU-heavy settings such as crowd density, simulation quality, or draw distance.
Aim for Consistent Frame Times
A stable 90 FPS often feels better than a frame rate that repeatedly swings between 80 and 150 FPS. Consider using an in-game frame limiter slightly below your system’s sustainable average, then retest after changing only one setting at a time.
